Venga Idaho!
This week went by, yet again, rather quickly. We also had a lot of rain this week which always helps us bear the sweltering sun of Sonora. With the rain, at times it literally fills entire streets with water. We had a day where we trudged happily through the calf-deep water to our next appointment.
We've also had a lot of different experiences with the different types of questions people have and the way they respond. For some of them, they would ask a question and seem at least content with the answer. For a few others they would ask a question more about the Book of Mormon. Our response however was never satisfactory for them. They would chew on the answer for a moment, spit it out, then continue to press on how they think only the Bible is the word of God. At times it felt like I was back in debate analyzing local fallacies and using scriptural cards to back up my doctrinal claim. At times it even felt like a wrestling match. At one point another person in this conversation was surprised that I wanted to respond to this spirtitual debacle. As he listened to my enthusiastic argument he shouted, "Venga Idaho!"
Others had a much different response. One person had been taught by some sister missionaries last year but didn’t have anyone follow up. When he asked about what the Book of Mormon is, he was sincere. He took a moment to think and then asked one question after another. He found delight in the responses to his questions and once he trusted in us enough, he shared a spiritual experience he had with us. He was happy to learn more about such eternal truth and didn’t need to tackle everything we said.
There is another family that loves the Bible like none other. A lot of the times when we're teaching and they like something we say, they’ll say "Amen!" It was a bit scary to be honest to share about the Book of Mormon fearing another debate to the spiritual death. But instead there was a very soft and quiet spirit as we had them close their eyes and listen to the words of the first visión.
That spirit of eternal truth and love is what I want to share with everyone. Even in debates or when they ask questions I always want to have that charity and openness.
I hope you all have a grand ole week.
The slightly taller Elder d'Evegnee
